About Us
Manchester Parent Carer Network is an organisation run by parent carers which aims to have a say in the services being developed for disabled children. We work by linking together with local support groups, parent representatives and service providers in the health, education, housing and social care sectors across Manchester.
In January 2011 an election for parent carer representatives from North, South and Central areas of Manchester were held. At this time 4 parent carers were elected to the steering group. The steering group purpose is to discuss issues affecting parents carers in Manchester. The development of the Parent Carer Forum is supported by Manchester Carers Forum a local charity. In March 2011 the name Manchester Parent Carer Network was adopted after a vote on possible names had taken place. In March 2011 the "Manchester Parent Carer Network" was launched at a conference event for parent carers in Manchester.
During the course of 2011 the steering group has adopted more members to fill gaps in capacity and knowledge. We have welcomed 2 new representatives for the central area of Manchester to fill vacancies on the steering group membership. The steering group then co-opted three new members to fill knowledge gaps that the steering group have felt were a priority. There will be more opportunities to be represented at the steering group and we will keep you informed about this. The current steering group membership is as follows:
North Manchester Reps:
Bev Dargan & Cath Stone
Central Manchester Reps:
Shahana Kashif & Verity Gaughan
South Manchester Reps:
Leslye Vaughan & Taiba Sheikh
Transition Group Rep:
Ann Tarpey (Co-opted)
South Manchester Downs Syndrome Support Group:
Bernadette Brooks (Co-opted)
Autumn Group (Autism Support):
Sue Broaderst (Co-opted)
The steering group is chaired currently by Nat O'Brien (Operations Manager - Manchester Carers Forum) and minutes are taken by Kerrie Wilson (Parent Participation Worker - Manchester Carers Forum). The steering group is also supported by Maureen Howell (Parent Partnership Service Manager) who provides updates on behalf of Manchester City Council Children's Services.
There are still some gaps in experience, knowledge and capacity which is under constant review by the steering group. We welcome your suggestions and ask you to contact us using the contact form in the Contact Us section or email nat@manchestercarersforum.org.uk or call 0161 819 2226
